There is only one protected landscape in Georgia – Tusheti Protected Landscape (area of 27 903 ha) that was established in 2003 and covers all villages in Tusheti.  The objective for creating protected landscape is to preserve traditional look of Tushetian villages and historical, cultural and natural landscapes of adjacent territory, as well as promote development of ecotourism and traditional agricultural activities without causing any damage to the environment.

Tusheti Protected Landscape is most notable for its charming historic villages. Some unique cultural monuments, such as ruins of villages, traditional crafts, traditional agricultural instruments and household appliances are still preserved in Tusheti villages.

Tusheti is very different site from other protected territories, since natural monuments are closely intertwined with historical and cultural monuments, traditions and customs of local people. This is the most attractive feature of Tusheti for visitors.
